can somebody please explain the ending to sophie's world to me?

oh, i get that much, i think. but the last few paragraphs stump me. i suspect gaarder's hidden something between the lines (considering the way he's abruptly ended it with the major and hilde going for a swim to the boat) but i don't know what it is!

and the worst thing is, googling sophie's world turns up very little! i thought this book was famous! i guess not many readers have gotten past the first twenty pages. this was my third attempt. :)
